Everyone talks about buying your modem because it can save you money, but they forget there are some benefits to renting it too. It’s important to weigh your personal circumstances before spending your hard earned cash on a new not so exciting device. If you don’t plan on sticking with your current provider for long or you’re not tech savvy enough to fix problems as they arise, you can actually lose money on your investment. No matter your internet provider, whether you have MetroNet, Frontier, Verizon, or AT&T, Here are five reasons why leasing your modem from your internet provider could make more sense for you and your family.
You don’t have to be a tech guru to get your new modem up and running, but could you get it back up after an outage? Or when it’s simply not working? Usually your internet provider will provide you with some level of technical support, but if you own your modem, there’s only so much your internet provider can do. If you’re not tech savvy and unable or unwilling to learn about your modem including potential problems, renting is the best solution for you. When you rent your modem, your internet provider will get you back up and running no matter what, even if that means they need to replace your rental modem.
Buying your own modem can be a risk. Do you have the spare cash to buy a replacement modem if yours breaks tomorrow or next week? We all hope that our electronics will last until we don’t need them anymore, but warranty plans for modems usually only last a year. After the year passes, you’re on your own and a new modem will come directly out of your pocket. The main advantage to renting your modem is you don’t own it! If it doesn’t power on, connect or is overheating; it isn’t on you to replace it. You just have to exchange it with your internet provider as long as the malfunction isn’t your fault.
When you purchase your own modem, you will have to install and maintain it. If you don’t think you’ll have the time or patience to deal with installing it or troubleshooting your modem when it stops working, renting your modem may not be right for you.
If you’re renting, think you’ll move within the next couple of years or are in any kind of short term living situation, it could make more sense to rent your modem from your internet provider. Your next home, apartment or condo might not have your current internet provider available. Investing in a modem that may not be compatible with any other internet provider in your area doesn’t make sense when you won’t get a return on your investment.
Most people buy their own modem as an investment that’s meant to save money overtime. If you’re not happy with your current internet service in spite of upgrading your internet plan and troubleshooting with your internet provider, it may not make sense to buy a modem right now. Solve your internet problems once and for all before investing in your own modem. If you’re likely to switch internet providers in the future, do that first before making the investment. Modems are individually tested and approved by each internet provider, so there’s a slim chance your new service provider will be compatible with another provider that’s available in your neighborhood.
