How To Get Into Competitive Gaming

Competitive gaming, more commonly known as electronic sports (e-sports), refers to participating in online tournaments, often in gaming arenas, for a shot at being a ‘pro’ and winning large amounts of cash prize.

But competitive gaming isn’t just a ‘game.’ Apart from the hefty prize pools, e-sports are actually recognized as an actual sport, becoming part of the Olympics in 2020.

In fact, because anyone can get into competitive gaming regardless of age, nationality, and gender, the global gaming market is considered vast and expansive; estimated to be at USD$ 168 billion in 2020.

However, getting into competitive gaming requires time, patience, and commitment. To get you started below are some tips to help you get started:

Focus your attention on each game and try to really understand what it’s about. Don’t worry because competitive gaming can be played using a personal computer, laptop, tablets, or mobile phones.

To the uninitiated, these are the major competitive gaming classifications. Check which one is most interesting to you:

  • First Person Shooter (FPS) – For those who want action, start with a game taken from the point of view of the player or shooter. This genre tries to take in the character of the shooter, and the on-screen graphics show what an actual shooter would see, hear and sound like, in specific situations. For example, competitive Call Of Duty tournaments for cash prizes are perhaps the best and most famous examples of FPS gaming genre.
  • Fighting Game Community (FGC) – This video game is great for competitive individuals, where various characters fight it out in an arena. There are rules to the game, but in the end, the winner must master specific techniques and specific combinations to beat the other gamers.
  • Real-Time Strategy (RTS) – Similar to a real-time war game, the mechanics of RTS typically include employing tactics to build resources, as well as strengthen defense and offense strategies, to defeat the enemy.
  • Multiplayer Online Batter Arena (MOBA) – If you consider yourself a team player and a strategic thinker, this genre may be right up your alley. MOBA is classified as a sub-genre of RTS, but with the latter, you’d have to work with your team and come up with strategy to win against an opposing group. This genre mixes the elements of role playing, strategic thinking, and high-level action games.
  • Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) – MMOG shares its DNA with MOBA, although they do have slight differences. MOBA can handle a limited number of persons in the team, while MMOG can accommodate hundreds to thousands of players who can interact, support, or fight against other players.

  • Become Part of A Gaming Community: Two or more heads are always better than one.
  • Participate In Small Games and Tournaments: To upgrade your skills and strategic-thinking, join games and tournaments. Big events, on the other hand, are generally by-invitation only, so you have to be really good in order to participate.
  • Learn From Your Opponents: When competing with others, always make it a point to study your opponent’s strategy, especially if hour dealing with a ‘pro’. It doesn’t matter if you lose the competition, you can always get a thing or two from a seasoned enemy.
  • Keep Getting Better: Once you’ve gotten the hang of competitive gaming, keep on improving.
