Irish and British iGaming giant Flutter Entertainment has made an announcement that its PokerStars-branded outfit has gone live in the iGaming market of Greece. Moving forward, it will be offering an assortment of online casinos, poker, and sports betting services.
The LSE listed brand explained through a press release that it has managed to accomplish a decade-long dream in launching its hard-working domain at PokerStars using an iGaming license approved by Greece’s Hellenic Gaming Commission regulator. PokerStars also revealed that the Hellenic Gaming Commission recently approved several other certifications some two years after laws allowing for sports betting and online casino gaming were passed.
The inauguration of PokerStars in Greece means poker aficionados no longer have to visit the unlicensed and un secure online gambling platforms, but instead visit sites that are fully regulated and certified as safe and secure. While at it, casino players can also access the full gamut of tournaments, offers and promotions for the licensed casino sites and real money games offered.
These are not the only advantages Greece players will be having. Since the services are offered by an offshore online gambling platform with a local license, it means that players on PokerStars.gr will be able to flutter or challenge players from foreign countries.
PokerStars has players from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa, and more than 10 million active members in a day. Greece players will be able to access this international player pool without any restriction.
As an online gambling market, Greece is a rather small addition to the fold. The country has a population of about 10.72 million, which is roughly 1/5 of the Italian, French, or UK populations. And the appeal of playing casino games or betting online is limited by a Player Withholding Tax, which every Greek resident is subject to.
Greek players living abroad are, therefore, wise to create an account with PokerStars in whichever country/jurisdiction they are in.
It has been a tough year for PokerStars.
GGPoker, a UK brand, has posed serious competition for PokerStars, threatening to overtake the brand in several areas. For the first time over the past fifteen years, PokerStars found themselves playing catch up in cash game traffic. In an effort to regain the crown, PokerStars has been tidying up its compliance portfolio. They pulled out of Taiwan and Macau last year, while the Dutch government actively pushed the brand out.
There has been an upside though. PokerStars expanded by launching their brand in Michigan and celebrated a second full year in the state of Pennsylvania.
